Why Are Gujarat Day And Maharashtra Day Observed On May 1 In 2023? Know The Relevance Of History

Every year on May 1, Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day are celebrated since that day, 57 years ago, saw the creation of the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

At the time, Bombay was home to people who spoke a variety of languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani, but it did not work out. After that, the Sanyukt Maharashtra Andolan began to campaign for its own state.

Gandhi Day:

Gujarat was established in 1960, however the concept for the state initially emerged in a publication named Kumar in 1928. A writer and independence warrior named KM Munshi was the one who initially suggested the notion of Mahagujarat. The recommendation was made during a session that took place in Karachi in 1937 during the Gujarat Sahitya Sabha. The Gujarat map was initially published in a journal with the poem “Uthtrishta Jagrat” by Devshavji Parmar.

The state’s 18,000 communities have had electricity for 24 hours thanks to this connection. Yojana farms in the state are also electrified by Jyotigra.

Day of Maharashtra:

However, there was a call for a separate state for Marathi-speaking citizens as early as 1940. In present-day Mumbai, the Samyukta Mahasabha Organisation was founded for the statehood cause. For a unique state, it needed more than 20 years and the backing of various commissions. In 1956, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, a former prime minister, proclaimed Bombay a Union territory for a period of five years. Later, the Lok Sabha approved a resolution endorsing Bombay’s bilingual state. In March 1960, the Lok Sabha recommends a state resolution. The Lower House approves the resolution establishing the state of Bombay a month later. The state of Maharashtra was established on May 1st, 1960, with Bombay as its capital.
