The business has now returned with an updated version of the software that drives its chatbots.

The amount of data the new chatbot had access to was kept a secret by OpenAI officials, but Brockman said the data set was “internet size,” meaning it covered enough websites to represent all English speakers online.

While utilising GPT-4 for the first time, the ordinary user may not immediately recognise its additional features. Yet as more regular users—both laypeople and professionals—of the service, they are likely to swiftly come into focus.

The bot will almost always provide an accurate summary when requested to summarise a long item from The New York Times.

Ask the chatbot whether the updated summary is correct after adding a few random phrases, and it will point out those extra sentences as the sole mistakes.

The behaviour was referred to as “reasoning” by Altman. Yet, technology is unable to replace human logic. It excels in analysing, summarising, and responding to challenging inquiries about books or news articles.

If questions are posed concerning future occurrences, it is far less effective. While it can compose a joke, it doesn’t demonstrate that it has any insight into what would really make someone laugh.

“It doesn’t understand the complexity of what is humorous,” said Oren Etzioni, the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI, a well-known lab in Seattle. Users may discover methods to manipulate the system into weird and unsettling behaviour, as with prior technology.

When asked to mimic someone else or carry out a role, this kind of bot sometimes deviates from the places it was intended to avoid.
