On Thursday, Indian boxer Shiva Thapa suffered an unexpected departure from the Men’s World Championships as two other fighters advanced to the pre-quarterfinals.
The Brazilian Dos Reis Yuri defeated 2015 bronze medalist Shiva (63.5 kg), who had been given a bye in the first round. The final result was made public after a review of the fight.Amit Panghal’s weight class opponent Deepak Kumar (51 kg) also advanced to the Round of 32, joining Narender Berwal (+92 kg) and Govind Sahani (48 kg) in the pre-quarterfinals.Second-seeded Shiva performed well to rebound from a slow start that lost him the opening round by a score of 1- 4.
In the second and third rounds, Thapa took the initiative and delivered vicious strikes. He utilised his jabs, hooks, and upper cuts to win the second round by a score of 3-2.He seemed to be headed for victory, but he slipped in the last two minutes, which most likely cost him the fight since he lost the majority of the vote in the review. Narender, who has previously been to the World Championships quarterfinals, beat Tajik Muhammad Abroridinov 4-1 to start his bid for a medal. Both pugilists, who shared the bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Championships, gave it their all right away. In the first round, Narender prevailed by landing solid blows and dodging close-ranged assaults from his adversary.
In the next two rounds, the Hisar-born fighter triumphed by continuing to assault from the front. In the quarterfinals, he will compete against Fernando Arzola of Cuba, who won the bronze medal at the 2021 World Youth Championships.Govind (48 kg), the 2022 Thailand Open winner, and Deepak (51 kg), the 2019 Asian silver medalist, both won their first matches earlier in the day.Govind, who has had a remarkable year so far with a gold at the National Championships and a silver at the 74th Strandja Memorial, carried on his strong streak of form as he breezed past Mehron Shafiev of Tajikistan to record a 5-0 victory.
