Share

On April 19, people all across the globe observe International Liver Day to increase awareness of conditions and illnesses relating to the liver. Since the liver is a very complicated bodily organ that regulates immunity, digestion, and metabolism, living with a sick liver is almost impossible. As a result, we must maintain the liver’s health.

According to the World Health Organization, liver diseases rank as India’s tenth most prevalent cause of death (WHO). Hence, International Liver Day is commemorated to encourage people to lead healthy lifestyles, refrain from consuming fatty foods, and raise awareness of liver illnesses.

2023 World Liver Day: Theme

World Liver Day’s 2018 theme is “Be Vigilant, Perform Regular Liver Check-Up, Fatty Liver Can Hurt Anybody.”

Facts to Consider About the Liver

The liver performs more than 500 tasks linked to metabolism, immunity, excretion, storing ingested nutrients, and many other processes. It is the second-most important organ in the body (after the brain). Any problem or illness with the liver impacts not just the digestive system but also the health of the kidney, lungs, heart, and brain. Moreover, a buildup of too much fat and other infections might harm the liver’s functioning.

Common signs of liver diseases include lack of appetite, discomfort in the abdomen, jaundice, and loss of weight.

Relevance of the Liver

Since the liver serves so many purposes and is so important to the functioning of the human digestive system, it is very important to maintain its health.

Disorders including hepatitis B, C, and hepatocellular carcinoma often result from poor lifestyle decisions, excessive alcohol and drug use, long-term consumption of unhealthy foods, a sedentary way of life, and a lack of exercise.

In order to prevent infections from spreading, let’s make a promise to be careful and safeguard the liver on this World Liver Day.
