An official said on Friday that thirty pupils from an ashram school in the Bhandara region of eastern Maharashtra were hospitalized owing to possible food poisoning.
He said that the event happened on Thursday at Yerali Ashram School in Tumsar town.
According to Milind Somkuwar, the district health officer for Bhandara, “Some students of the ashram school complained of vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever on Thursday, after which a team from the district health department examined 325 students residing in the school hostel.” According to him, 30 of the pupils were admitted to the Tumsar sub-district hospital for treatment.
The pupils became unwell after consuming food supplied to them at the hostel, thus we assume it to be a case of food poisoning, he added, adding that all the students are now stable and will be released shortly.
According to Somkuwar, the health agency has gathered samples of food and water for testing.
Children from tribal groups get an education up to the secondary level in ashram schools, which are residential institutions.
