The official Indian contender for the 2025 Oscars is Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, the Film Federation of India declared here on Monday.
Which films were up for awards?
The Malayalam National Award winner Aattam, the Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light, and the Bollywood hit Animal were among the 29 films that went into the selection process for the light-hearted parody on patriarchy that is the Hindi movie.
The 13-member select committee, under the direction of Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, unanimously chose Laapataa Ladies to compete in the Academy Awards’ Best International Picture category.
The list also included the Telugu films Hanu-Man and Kalki 2898 AD, the Tamil movie Maharaja, the Hindi films Article 370 and Swatantraya Veer Savarkar, and the Telugu film Kalki 2898 AD.
Last year, the Malayalam blockbuster 2018—Everyone is a Hero—was released. Oscar aspirations of Laapataa Ladies. Kiran has declared that the Picture Federation of India (FFI) will choose the greatest picture. If that happened, my dream would come true if it went to the Oscars. However, it’s a process, and I expect Laapataa Ladies to be considered. In the grand scheme of things, I’m confident the best movie will go, whichever they select,” Kiran said to PTI.
However, Kiran stated, “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office,” earlier in February during the film’s press screening. The biggest compliment we could receive would be if the public and spectators liked what we did.”
If the elite group selecting and judging the year’s best films accepts our movie, we’ll submit it for the coveted Oscars. But for now, we are excitedly awaiting the acknowledgement we have not yet received on March 1, 2024, which may indicate the movie’s premiere,” she stated.
The poignant and inspirational story of two brides in rural India in 2001 who unintentionally switched places during a train ride is told in Laapataa Ladies. Aamir Khan Productions and Rao’s Kindling Productions are producing the movie.
Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav play the main parts in the film, released in March of this year to widespread acclaim from reviewers. Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma are also stars.
