According to an official, police busted a phoney contact centre using a farmhouse in the Palghar region of Maharashtra and detained 49 of its workers. The representative from Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police claimed the contact centre was situated in Arnala, close to Rajodi beach, in the municipality of Virar. The accused used to eavesdrop on an Australian business’s incoming calls while acting as workers for an online payments provider.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone III Virar Suhas Bawche, they would reportedly take the company’s customer database and provide it to contact centre employees so they could scam the firm’s clients. After the search on Sunday, the police also confiscated equipment and technology worth Rs 16.19 lakh from the contact centre and detained 49 personnel, including 10 women who were from other states, he added.
He said that efforts were being made to find both the owner of the vehicle and the landowner who leased the space to the contact centre. According to senior inspector Kalyan Karpe of the Arnala police station, the police were looking into who was involved in the scam and how the Australian company’s clients were taken advantage of. According to Bawche, the detained individuals have been charged under pertinent sections of the Indian Criminal Code, the Information Technology Act, and the Indian Telegraph Act.
