When we lose more fluids than we consume, we get dehydrated. This causes an electrolyte imbalance in the body and reduces our capacity to operate normally. Dehydration is a serious condition that must be quickly treated in order to preserve general health. Dr. Deepak Jakhar, MBBS, MD Dermatologist and Co-Founder of Dermosphere Clinic, walks us through symptoms of dehydration and prevention advice:
Your skin may feel tight, scratchy, or flaky if it is dry. Skin elasticity loss may cause fine lines and wrinkles to seem more apparent.
Lips That Are Chapped or Cracked: Your lips may feel tight and dry, or they may start to crack. Lips might seem inflamed, peeling, or red.
Lackluster Composition: Dehydration may cause the skin to seem duller and less luminous.
expanded skin Sensitivity: Skin that is dehydrated is more susceptible to irritants, which may cause itching, redness, or pain.
Dehydrated skin may have decreased wound healing, making it more difficult for cuts and other wounds to heal quickly.
Tips for Preventing Dehydration and Keeping Healthy Skin and Lips:
Keep Hydrated Throughout the Day: Drinking enough water will keep you hydrated throughout the day. Create reminders to remind yourself to consistently drink water.
Eat Hydrating Foods: Consume fruits and vegetables high in water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and lettuce. Include meals that are high in healthy fats, such as avocados and almonds, to help your skin stay hydrated.
Use Hydrating Skincare Products: To keep moisture in, look for moisturizers and serums that include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. To keep lips moisturized, use lip balm with moisturizing components like shea butter or coconut oil.
Limit the use of hot water and abrasive cleaners since they may dry up your skin by removing its natural oils. Use gentle, moisturizing cleansers and lukewarm water.
Apply sunscreen every day to protect your skin from UV radiation, which may lead to skin dryness. When the sun is at its hottest, wear clothing that will totally protect you and look for cover.
Utilize a humidifier to give moisture to the air and avoid extreme skin dryness, particularly during dry seasons.
Moderate Alcohol and Caffeine Intake: Both alcohol and caffeine may dehydrate you by acting as diuretics. They take in more water to counteract their increasing consumption.
