On Sunday night, a 40-story skyscraper that was still under construction had an elevator disaster that killed seven workers. After the collision, the seventh victim was found alive, but he eventually passed away from his wounds.
After the incident on Sunday night, laborer Sunil Kumar (21), was rescued from the building’s basement carpark. He was taken to a hospital where he later passed away from his injuries late on Sunday night, according to Yasin Tadvi, the head of Thane Municipal Corporation’s crisis management unit.
According to senior police inspector Uttam Sonawane of the Kapurbawdi police station, a case has been filed against the contractor under Indian Penal Code sections 304(2) (rash and negligent act), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
This 40-story building’s construction lift fell on Sunday night in the Balkum neighborhood off of Ghodbunder Road.
How did the mishap occur?
Tadvi said on Sunday that it wasn’t the usual elevator but a construction lift. Around 7.30 p.m., the lift crashed to the earth and landed in P3 (three floors below ground in the parking area), the worker claimed. “The workers had finished water-proofing work and entered the lift at the 40th floor,” he said.
The construction lift’s supporting wire apparently broke, causing the catastrophe, according to reports.
Firefighters and members of the local emergency management cell were on the scene quickly and rescued the employees from the parking lot in the basement.
According to PTI, the cause of the elevator cable’s problem was not yet known.
