Oommen Chandy, a prominent Congress politician and former chief minister of Kerala, passed away on Friday. Mallikarjun Kharge, the party’s president, praised him for his “visionary leadership” in a statement.
According to Kharge, Chandy’s unrelenting dedication and imaginative leadership have permanently shaped both the state’s development and the politics of the country.
Chandy passed away early on Tuesday in Bengaluru. He was 79.
The senior Congress politician Chandy also received condolences from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said: “We have lost a humble and dedicated leader who devoted his life to public service and worked toward the progress of Kerala.”
“I recall my various interactions with him, especially when we both served as Chief Ministers of our respective states, and later when I moved to Delhi,” Modi said in a tweet. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace, his soul.
The former chief minister will be remembered with a two-day mourning period, which the Keralan government has declared a public holiday for on Tuesday.
Rahul Gandhi, a former leader of the Congress, too expressed sympathy on Chandy’s passing.
“Oommen Chandy ji was a model member of the Congress from the grassroots. For his lifetime of dedication to the people of Kerala, he will be remembered, according to Gandhi.
We shall miss him terribly, he continued. Love and sympathy to all of his family members.
On Twitter, the Congress posted: “Deeply saddened by the passing of former Kerala chief minister and esteemed Congress leader Oommen Chandy.”
“A political stalwart, his services to Kerala’s advancement and prosperity will never be forgotten. He is a real statesman who leaves a lasting legacy that will motivate future generations. We send our sincere sympathies to his family and friends during this trying time. “May his soul find everlasting peace,” it wished.
Chandy was a devoted Congressman who stood up as a leader of the people, according to party president Kharge, who expressed his condolences and paid respect to the leader.
“The advancement of Kerala and the political climate of the country were forever changed by his steadfast dedication and innovative leadership. He will be cherished for his commitment to and assistance to the populace. Condolences from the bottom of my heart to the family and friends,” he tweeted.
Chandy is a remarkable individual and a great mass leader, according to Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Congress responsible for communications.
He described the politician as “a man of great simplicity and unfailing courtesy, giving everything he had to the welfare of his constituents and of the people of Kerala.”
Ramesh said that Chandy’s time as chief minister was significant for a number of accomplishments that were extensively praised and acknowledged by the UN as well. I had the opportunity of knowing him for a long time, and I can still remember our trips we had together to several Attappadi towns ten years ago.

His leadership and vigor would be missed by the Congress family, it added.
K Sudhakaran, the leader of the party’s Kerala branch, expressed sympathy for Chandy’s departure and stated, “The story of the king who conquered over the globe with the strength of ‘love’ reaches its heartbreaking conclusion.
“I am very grieved by the passing of Oommen Chandy today. He had a profound impact on the lives of numerous people, and his legacy will live on in our hearts forever. “RIP,” he cried.
Senior Congressman and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor commented on his tweet from a few months back, in which he had expressed his desire to see Chandy in the hospital and pray for his full recovery, saying, “Unfortunately, it was not to be. Millions of people are devastated by the news of Oommen Chandy’s demise. In this really sad moment, my thoughts and prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace, his soul. OMG Shanti.
K C Venugopal, the general secretary of the Congress in charge of the organization, expressed sorrow at Chandy’s passing.
He was a chief minister with vision who left behind a significant record of pro-people government. Kerala rose to unprecedented heights under his imposing leadership, and he revolutionized the state with his reformist policies. His departure is a significant loss for the Keralan people and the Congress party, he said.
“I grieve the passing of our guide together with the rest of our state. I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends, Venugopal continued.
“We mourn the loss of former Kerala CM and Congress stalwart Shri Oommen Chandy,” the Indian Youth Congress said on Twitter in regards to Chandy’s passing. He fought for advancement, democracy, and secularism.
“His devotion and charm inspired a generation of young leaders. We offer prayers for both his soul and his grieving family, the party’s youth wing declared.
The former chief minister of Kerala passed away, according to a Facebook post by his son Chandy Oommen. He just said “Appa has passed away” in his letter.
Chandy, who had been experiencing health issues for a while, had been staying in Bengaluru to get treatment at a hospital.
Chandy’s passing is mourned by Delhi’s CM and AAP leader.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, paid homage to the late Oommen Chandy, the former chief minister of Kerala, on Tuesday, saying that he would always be remembered for his contributions to public service and his unflinching dedication to the welfare of people.
“Disappointed to learn about Shri Oommen Chandy Ji’s departure as the former chief minister of Kerala. We shall always remember his efforts to public service and his steadfast dedication to the well-being of the populace, Kejriwal tweeted.
Adding, “May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
