Google said on Thursday that it is collaborating with news organizations to create a new AI-powered tool to assist journalists as they report and write their articles.
The New York Times, which is collaborating with The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal to test the new product, broke the story first.
The story, which cited unidentified sources, said that the technology, internally referred to as Genesis, was still in the testing phase but had already impressed certain news executives to the point of being “unsettling.”
In a statement, a Google spokesperson stated that “in partnership with news publishers, especially smaller publishers, we’re in the earliest stages of exploring ideas to potentially provide AI-enabled tools to help their journalists with their work.”
Simply put, these technologies are not designed to replace the crucial role that journalists play in reporting, developing, and fact-checking their pieces, she said.
According to the business, the gadget would serve as a kind of co-pilot for reporters and editors by offering possibilities for headlines or other writing styles.
The Google initiative comes in the wake of revelation of a partnership between OpenAI and The Associated Press, in which the developer of ChatGPT was granted permission to train AI using AP archives dating back to 1985.
“The arrangement sees OpenAI licensing part of AP’s text archive, while AP will leverage OpenAI’s technology and product expertise,” the two organizations stated in a joint statement last week.
Since over ten years ago, The AP has automated corporate earnings reporting and covered select athletic events.
