Characters abound in West Indies cricket. Andre Russell is as as showy as Chris Gayle, if not more so. During batting practice in Kolkata, the powerful Jamaican, who is returning to India for the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, told media that he is a “legend” and asked everyone to come see him bat.
“I’ll work to make everyone here pleased. The way the ball is emerging from the bat pleases me. Hopefully, I can repeat the same performance throughout this IPL, Russell reportedly stated. Would you please watch me bat? I’m legendary. The leader for the Kolkata Knight Riders said, “I want all of you to support me.
Throughout the years, Russell has been a rock for KKR. Last year, despite the team’s terrible performance, Russell was one of their top players, hitting at an absurd strike rate of 174.48 and scoring 335 runs. He is renowned for his six-hitting skills, similar to Gayle, and struck as many as 32 sixes last season. He is also a very useful alternative with the ball; his 17 wickets last season were the highest total in the league.
Russell has played in 98 games and scored 2,035 runs overall while striking out at a rate of 177.88. His enormous six count is 175. He has also claimed 89 wickets.
With the potential of having to captain the team without injured Shreyas Iyer, Russell may have even bigger duties in the IPL of 2023. Iyer has been battling a back issue, and surgery is anticipated to treat it. According to prior estimates, Iyer’s injuries might prevent him from working for five months.
Along with Tim Southee and Shakib Al Hasan, Russell may be considered by KKR for the leadership after leading the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
The Kolkata-based team has consistently been in the top half of the IPL standings, twice taking home the championship in 2012 and 2014 and placing second in 2021.
This year’s IPL season is set to begin for KKR on April 1 at Mohali with a match against the Punjab Kings.
