Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, Elon Musk pledged to export Tesla vehicles to India “as soon as humanly possible.” There have been multiple rumors about Tesla creating a new automobile for the Indian market since his tweet, or should we say X, and according to the most recent sources, Tesla personnel are now in India to discuss for the negotiations on the same. According to reports, Tesla executives will meet with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to go through the manufacturing schedule for a brand-new vehicle that would cost around Rs 20 lakh ($24,000). If the proposal is implemented, India will get the least expensive Tesla vehicle, which would be around 25% less expensive than the entry-level Tesla Model 3 sedan.
Musk often claims that the government made it difficult for him to introduce his goods in India. Due to “Challenges with the government,” Tesla isn’t yet in India, as he had previously reported. Although India has the “highest import duties in the world by far” on EVs, Musk has said that he still plans to introduce automobiles there.
Currently, India charges a 100% import tax on vehicles imported for more than $40,000 (Rs 30 lakh), including insurance and shipping costs, and a 60% import tax on vehicles imported for less than $40,000 (Rs 30 lakh). In order to address this and keep pricing low for the general public, Tesla is currently preparing to build the vehicle there.
