The police have filed a complaint against seven men after a video of the alleged gang-rape of two young girls in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district leaked on social media, according to an official.
Five suspects have been detained in relation to the event, which happened around 25 days ago in a woodland region under the jurisdiction of the Hanumana police station. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Sonkar, a video of it circulated on Sunday.
He said that the victims, two cousins who were 14 and 16, had brought goats into the forest to graze on. The official said that several wandering individuals reportedly raped the females and recorded the incident on camera.
He said that the accused intimidated the victims, saying they would release the tape if the girls told anybody about the event. The police launched an investigation and located the victims after the video appeared on social media, according to Sonkar.
He claimed the girls informed the police they were afraid when the accused threatened them and that’s why they didn’t report it sooner. On Monday, after receiving complaints from the victims and their families, the police launched a case against seven people. According to the official, while looking for the other two, five of them have been detained.
In addition to being charged with gang rape and unlawful imprisonment under the POCSO Act and related parts of the Indian Penal Code, the accused has also been charged with filming and disseminating the video in violation of the Information Technology Act.
