By mutual consent, Antonio Conte has resigned as manager of Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur, the club said on Sunday.
Cristian Stellini, the Italian’s assistant, has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the campaign.
The news comes little over a week after Conte launched into a post-game tirade during which he criticised the club’s ownership as well as the team’s players for being “selfish.”
In a club statement issued late Sunday night, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy stated, “We have a battle on our hands for a Champions League position. We have 10 Premier League games left.” “We must work together as a team. To get the best result for our Club and great, devoted fans, everyone must stand up.
Tottenham was under Antonio Conte’s leadership for 16 months, however he was unable to break the team’s trophy drought that began in 2008.
His time came to an unseemly conclusion, and it was practically inevitable that he would go following the 3-3 tie against Southampton due to his outburst. The season’s conclusion was when his contract was set to expire. The 53-year-old Conte ripped into his squad for what he saw as a bad attitude, accusing them of not working together as a unit and failing to handle pressure, before declaring: “20 years there is the (same) owner and they never won anything.”
Tottenham officially announced his departure after many days of rumours surrounding his future.
The London club released a statement in which it said that “we can confirm that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement.” “We qualified for the Champions League in Antonio’s first year with the Club. We appreciate Antonio’s efforts and wish him the best going forward.
Tottenham will not get any awards this year as a result of Conte’s departure, since it will not compete in the Champions League or FA Cup. Nonetheless, the squad is now in fourth position in the standings and has a chance to return to the Champions League next year.
Nuno Espirito Santo was replaced as manager of Tottenham Hotspur by a former Chelsea manager in November 2021, when the team was in seventh position. He was one of just three Tottenham managers to lead the team to a top-four finish during the Premier League era.
Although Harry Redknapp qualified for the Champions League twice in 2009-10 and 2011-12, Mauricio Pochettino accomplished it four times between 2015–16 and 2018–19.
Since Conte’s appointment, Tottenham has spent approximately $140 million, including $73.5 million for Brazilian attacker Richarlison. Pedro Porro, a wing defender who was most recently signed, was chosen because he fits Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 structure.
Conte has recently returned to the sidelines following gallbladder surgery, and he has also had to deal with personal trauma following the deaths of three close friends over the past five months, including former players Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gianluca Vialli and Tottenham fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone.
Even for a manager with a history of being angry, his reaction after Southampton was unexpected.
They prefer not to perform under duress. They prefer not to play under pressure, he remarked.
Others saw it as proof that he intended to leave.
TV analyst Jamie Carragher at the time tweeted, “Conte wants to be terminated (fired) in this international break.” Spurs need to end his suffering immediately and do so tonight.
As Conte was recuperating from recent surgery, Stellini managed Tottenham’s first team, which included the FA Cup defeat to lower-league Sheffield United.
Ryan Mason has been chosen to serve as the head coach’s assistant.
