According to cyber intelligence company CloudSEK, cybercriminals are using the popularity of ChatGPT to distribute malware through hacked Facebook accounts. 13 Facebook pages or profiles, including those with Indian content and a combined following of more than 5 lakh, have been identified by CloudSEK as having been hijacked and are now being used to spread malware through Facebook adverts.
“Cybercriminals are taking use of ChatGPT’s popularity to spread malware through Facebook advertisements by hacking into legal Facebook accounts, taking advantage of Facebook’s enormous user base, and endangering the security of its users. 13 hacked pages with more than 500k followers—some of which have been taken over since February 2023—have been found as a result of our study. Users are urged to exercise caution and to be alert to such malicious activity on the platform “Bablu Kumar, a cyber intelligence analyst with CloudSEK, stated.
At least 25 malicious websites that impersonate the OpenAI.com website, according to CloudSEK, have been discovered. These websites are tricking people into downloading and installing destructive software, endangering their security and privacy.
“The dangerous software is not only capable of stealing private information from the user’s device, including PII, system information, and credit card numbers, but it also has the ability to replicate itself and propagate to other computers through removable media. It presents a serious concern due to its capacity to raise privileges and consistently stay on the system “explained Kumar.
