The Indian government is allegedly working on a new electric vehicle policy that will lower import duties on foreign automobiles, which might mean the long wait for Tesla cars to enter the country is finally ended. Officials in the Modi government have reportedly stated that the new policy might permit automakers to import fully manufactured electric cars at a 15% import charge, provided that they also commit to investing in domestic production.
The report asserts that Tesla made the idea and that the government is taking it into consideration. According to a source acquainted with the situation, “there is an understanding with Tesla’s proposal and the government is showing interest.”
Currently, import taxes on finished vehicles range from 70% for the rest of the range to 100% for vehicles costing more than $40,000. Imported cars are unreasonably expensive as a result of this high tax. Model Y, the entry-level Tesla model, costs $47,740 in the US, making all Tesla vehicles subject to a 100% import charge if brought in as completely assembled.
Model Y costs Rs 50 lakh in India, whereas Model S costs Rs 1.5 crore and Model X costs Rs 2 crore, according to automobile websites. Model 3 costs Rs 60 lakh, which is a little more than Model Y. However, if the report is accurate and the government does indeed cut the import duty to 15% in exchange for starting domestic manufacturing, Tesla and other vehicles not currently made in India will become much more affordable in the nation, assuming the automakers agree to begin making such vehicles in India.
According to the report, the government would proceed cautiously because speeding up the process could upset local competitors like Tata and Mahindra, which have made significant investments in electric vehicles, and disrupt the market. “Even if the government is eager to acquire Tesla, this will undergo a lengthy review process. The effect on domestic players is the reason for that, the official was cited as saying.
Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, told reporters that she hasn’t seen any plan to lower import taxes on electric vehicles. Tesla and the Commerce Ministry have not responded to the situation.
It is noteworthy that recent reports claim Tesla would introduce a cheap vehicle, priced at about $24,000, that will be produced in India. Tesla has expressed interest in establishing a facility in India to manufacture affordable electric automobiles for both the domestic market and export. Senior Tesla executives and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met last month to discuss this.
Rohan Patel, senior executive for public policy and business development at Tesla, and Roshan Thomas, vice president for supply chain, also met with representatives from the Invest India organisation. At the same time, it was revealed that Tesla and an Indian partner had rented office space in Pune.
After meeting CEO Elon Musk during his visit to the US in June, this has happened. Musk has stated that Tesla would shortly enter India after the meeting. He had stated, “I intend to travel to India in the upcoming year. We will bring Tesla to India as soon as it is humanly possible, I’m sure of it.
“I would like to thank PM Modi for his support and hopefully, we will be able to announce something in the future,” Elon Musk had stated.
Tesla now operates plants in China and Germany, both outside the United States, and is currently developing a facility in Mexico to produce a new mass-market vehicle.
Tesla presently produces the premium Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y vehicles. After a lengthy wait, it has begun shipping the Cybertruck. The business also manufactures the Tesla Semi electric semi-truck. Additionally, it is developing the next-generation Roadster electric sports car as well as the reported Model 2, which may be the less expensive vehicle that will be produced in Mexico and India.
