The last non-AC double-decker red bus left Mumbai’s bustling streets this morning with an emotional farewell that touched the city’s spirit.
The treasured non-AC Double-Decker red bus departed from its dedicated duty, marking the end of an era for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) program.
Having said that, Mumbai Heritage has uploaded a goodbye video regarding the subject on social media. In the video, you can see the bus leaving the Marol Depot while being beautifully swayed by colorful balloons and aromatic flowers. Excited passengers filled its seats, and the driver, who personified the spirit of this historic period coming to an end, was the center of attention. It was a bittersweet occasion.
The Double-Decker bus has been an integral part of Mumbai residents’ life for years, serving as more than simply a means of transportation. These recognizable buses gracefully traveled the busy streets of our city for an incredible 86 years, creating unforgettable memories in the hearts of everyone who had the opportunity of riding them.
The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) administration announced that the route between Agarkar Chowk and Seepz bus station will see the last day of operation for these double-decker red buses without air conditioning. In a kind act, BEST organized more than a dozen journeys down this route to give the public one more chance to relive their treasured memories.
The first week of October marks the end of the open-deck double-decker buses as well. To carry on the tradition in a more contemporary manner, BEST, the city’s transportation and energy supplier, has confirmed intentions to buy new open double-decker buses.
Through “Aapli Best Apapachachashtya,” a moving goodbye ceremony will be held to celebrate the heritage of this legendary car. The general public, bus lovers, and commuters in Mumbai are all welcome to this moving event. It will begin at 5:30 PM on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Agarkar Chowk in Andheri East.
In this event, Mumbaikars who have traveled in these double-decker buses throughout the years will be honored for the innumerable memories, tales, and trips they have shared. It’s a parting tribute in appreciation and affection to a venerable monument to Mumbai’s past.
