Amit Shah, the union home minister, said on Sunday that political parties were still hesitant to observe “Telangana Liberation Day” because of vote-bank politics even after the state of Telangana was established.
Shah was addressing at the official ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ ceremony held by the Centre to mark the region’s liberation from previous Nizam rule and the merging of Hyderabad state with the Indian Union on September 17, 1948, according to PTI.
He referred to it as “unfortunate” that political parties were reluctant to observe “Liberation Day” because of vote-bank tactics, the statement stated.
He was reported in the article as saying, “I would like to tell them that people of the country would turn away from those who turn away from their country’s history.”
The article said that the historic “Hyderabad Liberation Day” has not been observed by any administration in the last 75 years, as the Union Minister noted.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to honor the Hyderabad Liberation Day, adding that earlier administrations had not observed it out of fear due to “appeasement policies.”
Hyderabad was liberated, according to Shah, who also attributed the nation’s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose efforts led to the Nizam’s Razakars, or armed subjects who supported Nizam rule, surrendering.
G Kishan Reddy, the head of the BJP in Telangana and the Union Tourism Minister, also addressed at the event, it said.
After a police operation known as “Operation Polo,” which reached its conclusion on September 17, 1948, the State of Hyderabad, which had been ruled by the Nizam, was annexed to the Union of India.
