Since it debuted in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been available for over six years. As we near the conclusion of its lifespan, speculations about the next-generation Switch—possibly known as the Nintendo Switch 2—are become more and more popular.
Recently, a Nintendo patent surfaced, perhaps providing the first glimpse of the design of the company’s next platform. The patent was submitted last year and released this year in October, as noted by Gamerant. The patent shows off what seems to be a newly created console.
To start, the rumored console has a very different look from the Switch at the moment. The console in question has a new design with one joystick on the left and four buttons on the right, as opposed to one based on Joy-Cons. Its shoulder buttons on top are still present, and noticeably, the home button seems to have been shifted to the bottom.
With just six buttons and a pressure-sensitive touch screen, the system overall looks to be different based only on the renderings. But whether it’s the long-rumored Switch 2 or whether there’s a twist, that remains to be seen.
However, a few months ago, at Gamescom, it was reported that Nintendo made Switch 2 devices accessible for users “behind closed doors” for a small group of journalists, allowing them to play a remastered version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with significantly higher resolution and other game demonstrations. However, it should be emphasized that Nintendo has not yet issued an official statement.
According to VGC, the Nintendo Switch 2 is anticipated to debut in 2024 at some point. Unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, it may include a portable mode like the Nintendo Switch.
