The instant messaging program WhatsApp is apparently about to release another significant security feature on its platform after the launch of its new privacy call relay function. A report claims that the Meta-owned app is developing a different profile privacy feature.
“We found that WhatsApp is working on an alternative profile feature as a new tool to hide your information, and it will be accessible in a future version of the app,” WABetaInfo said. This information was gleaned from the most recent WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.24.4 update, which is available on the Google Play Store.
The report said that users will be able to create a substitute picture and name that will be displayed to contacts who are unable to see their main profile information via a new alternate profile function that will be available under the privacy screen regarding profile photo.
If, for instance, your profile photo is only visible to those on your contact list, then those who are not on your contact list will still be able to see your other profile image. You’ll be able to access the same functionality from the area of your profile as well.
According to the analysis, the alternative profile option might act as a barrier. As users eventually have greater control over their information, it will enhance their experience with an additional layer of protection and privacy. In the future, customers will be able to choose alternative information and create an alternate profile, which will allow them to keep even more anonymity.
“We believe that when the option to configure a WhatsApp username becomes accessible in the future, this function will prove to be quite beneficial. Users who reach out to you via a username will still be able to see your other profile, which you may set up, but it won’t be the same as your main one, according to WABetaInfo.
The other profile privacy feature is being worked on and will be included in a later app release.
