Satabdi Roy, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stirred up controversy on Friday, January 12, when she disparaged Lord Ram by calling him “below the poverty line (BPL)” in an attempt to poke fun at the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Lok Sabha MP is heard saying, “They (the BJP) are claiming that a house is being given to Ram,” in a video that has since gone viral on social media. This stunned me to hear. They are so powerful that they can grant Ram a house.
Ram has to be considered BPL, or below the poverty line. Similar to how homes are intended for BPL card holders, it appears that Ram is receiving a house from the BJP as part of the BPL programme.
The Trinamool Congress politician said, “The work will be done if one house each can be given to Ram’s son’s Luv and Kush.”
BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar snapped to attention after hearing her divisive comments, saying, “Satabdi Roy’s statement on Prabhu Shri Ram itself proves @MamataOfficial led @AITCofficial’s mindset about Hindu faith and deep-rooted beliefs.” This is deplorable and offensive to all Hindus worldwide.
A Trinamool Congress leader has already made disparaging comments about Lord Ram. An alleged TMC politician was heard telling Hindus in a video that went viral in November 2020 that they were not allowed to shout “jai Shree Ram” in West Bengal.
It is no secret that the Trinamool Congress Party despises Jai Shree Ram. In May 2019, Mamata Banerjee had lost her cool as some people were singing the ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan on a road.
Additionally, she asserted that anyone reciting the holy Hindu chant was a criminal and would face consequences. Twelve or so people were taken into custody for chanting the phrase in front of the chief minister.
