In response to the Maharashtra government’s decision to grant the Marathas access to all advantages formerly enjoyed by the state’s other backward classes (OBCs) until they receive reservations, union minister Narayan Rane responded on Sunday. Rane predicted that the action would lead to discontent in the state, that it would lead to the community’s suppression, and that it would result in other underdeveloped areas invading its borders.
“I disagree with the state government’s choice and the hope it expressed over the Maratha community’s reservation. The Union minister tweeted in Marathi on X (previously Twitter) that this has historical traditions of the Maratha community and that encroachment on other backward communities may create resentment in the state. He announced that he would address the issue at a press conference today.
The Maharashtra government stated in a draft announcement that all Maratha blood relatives who had the necessary documentation belonged to the agrarian Kunbis. They will be able to gain from OBCs thanks to it.
Activist Manoj Jarange called for an indefinite fast to demand that all members of the Maratha community be included in the OBC category. On Sunday, he called off the fast in response to the government’s draft notification.
But according to the notification, the activist promised to keep up the protest until all of the perks were promised.
“We will not stop until the new regulations the state is going to implement help at least one member of my community. I’ve seen the draft from the state administration, and the official announcement hasn’t been out yet. We are keeping a careful eye on the events,” he informed reporters.
