Imran Khan, a former Pakistani prime minister and the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), vowed on Saturday to organize national demonstrations if elections in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were not conducted within 90 days.
The former prime minister of Pakistan urged demonstrations after the 90-day window had passed and said it was his duty to fight for the rule of law.
The PTI leader made these statements while speaking to a gathering of journalists at his Lahore home and while addressing the country through video connection.
He said that the nation would not have a constitution if elections were not conducted within 90 days. He said that it was now important for the populace to support the rule of law and the constitution.
Imran Khan said that the Shehbaz Sharif administration attacked the judiciary out of concern for the upcoming elections.
“The organization responsible for defending the constitution is the Supreme Court. Since they are afraid of the elections, these individuals are assaulting the court. The same judges who ruled against us also declared the election. Courts opened at midnight, and I never had anything negative to say about the judiciary, Imran Khan said.
Elections in Pakistan have been delayed till October 8 due to security concerns and the government’s unwillingness to comply with the electoral process.
The former cricketer-turned-politician Khan was removed from office in April of last year after losing a vote of no confidence, making him the first prime minister of Pakistan to be removed by the National Assembly.
Since being ousted, he has pushed for immediate elections to replace what he called the Prime Minister Sharif-led “imported administration” in the nation.
