On April 2, 88-year-old Salim Durani, a former cricketer for India, died away. Durani was widely renowned for having movie star good looks, a puckish sense of humor, and a propensity for consistently hitting massive sixes.
The cricketer passed away while living with his younger brother in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Among those who conveyed their sympathies were former Indian coach Ravi Shastri and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After breaking his thigh bone in an incident earlier in January, Durani reportedly had proximal femoral nail surgery.
Durani, a Kabul native, participated in 29 Tests between 1960 and 1973. The illustrious all-rounder made his India debut at Brabourne in January against Australia, and played his last Test match there against England 13 years later.
Durani was not just a skilled ball-smashing player but also a competent left-arm orthodox spin bowler. In the historic five-match Test series between India and England in 1961–1962, the all-rounder contributed to India’s 2-0 triumph over England by taking eight and ten wickets in victories at Calcutta and Madras, respectively.
On the national squad, he achieved just one century and seven fifty-sixes throughout his illustrious career, totaling 1,202 runs in 50 innings.
Durani made his Bollywood debut in the 1973 film Charitra, partnering legendary actor Praveen Babi, after an illustrious career in the sport of cricket.
After Durani’s passing, PM Modi posted on Twitter to express his sorrow.
“Salim Durani Ji was an institution in cricket and a legend in his own right. He significantly aided India’s ascent in the cricketing globe. He was well-known for his manner both on and off the field. afflicted by his death. We send our sympathies to his family and friends. The Indian Prime Minister tweeted, “May his soul rest in peace.
“Salim Durani Ji had a very ancient and strong link with Gujarat. He made Gujarat his home. I had the chance to engage with him and was extremely struck by his varied demeanor. He will undoubtedly be missed,” said PM Modi. “He played for Saurashtra and Gujarat for a few years.
Upon the legend’s passing, former Indian coach Shastri also composed a sympathy letter.
“Salim Durani is undoubtedly one of India’s most colorful cricket players. The former cricketer-turned-commentator penned, “Rest in Peace.”
