An official announced on Monday that Mumbai Police had detained a Gujarati student who had allegedly tweeted that an Akasa Air plane “will go down.” The Indian Criminal Code Articles 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) were invoked after the private airline complained about the tweet to the airport police station in this city, the official said.
According to him, the 18-year-old student tweeted, “AkasaAir Boeing 737 Max will go down.” The student was detained on March 27 as a result of a team being deployed to Surat, Gujarat, after city police in the course of their investigation tracked the tweet’s IP address to that city, the official added.
According to the official, the suspect admitted to the police during questioning that he was curious about aeroplanes and had not anticipated the consequences of posting something like that on social media. The student added that he did not intend to cause trouble when he informed the cops that. The accused was released on a Rs 5,000 bond after a day in prison because his exams were still in progress, the officer said.
