The Home Ministry named senior IPS officer Satish Golcha as the new Delhi Police Commissioner on Thursday. The appointment occurred one day after the Delhi Chief Minister was allegedly attacked by a man during a Jan Sunvai (public hearing) inside her official residence.
An order from the Home Ministry on August 21 read: “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Shri. Satish Golcha, IPS (AGMUT:1992), presently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”
Golcha will take over for incumbent SBK Singh, who earlier this month took up the additional responsibility of Delhi Police Commissioner. Singh was only a commissioner for 21 days.
Golcha is the Director General (Prisons) at the moment. An IPS officer from the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre class of 1992, he has been putting significant operational improvements into Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini prisons while also trying to improve security measures there.
He assumed the role of DG (Prisons) in May last year. Before that, he worked for the Delhi Police as a Special CP (Intelligence). He has also led the Delhi Crime Branch, served as Special CP (Law and Order, Zone II), and held the position of DGP in Arunachal Pradesh.
People attribute the recent attack on the Chief Minister to the change in Delhi Police leadership. A Gujarati man allegedly assaulted Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing. According to reports, the person is a dog lover.
