BJP national secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has come under fire from the Congress for saying that women “look like Shurpanakha in terrible clothing,” but Madhya Pradesh opposition party Legislator Lakshman Singh has come out in defence of the saffron party chief. Digvijaya Singh’s younger brother, Lakshman Singh, is a three-term lawmaker and a five-time member of the Lok Sabha for the Congress. On Thursday, Vijayvargiya said the contentious thing during a religious event in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Thereafter, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was the target of demonstrations organised by the Congress state unit in Bhopal and Indore. Vijayvargiya’s assertion was corroborated by senior Congress Member Lakshman Singh in a tweet on Sunday. “Listened to the Surpanakha remark made by Kailash Ji. In a certain sense, it is true. Ahilya Devi’s sanskars are from Indore, therefore pay close attention to the clothing there. You are the uncrowned king of Indore, so how is this possible, Kailash Bhai? the lawmaker stated. Lakshman Singh joined the BJP in 2003, leaving the organisation in 2009.
In the epic Ramayana, Shurpanakha was the sister of the demon king Ravana. On leaving for home at night, Vijayvargiya had previously commented, “I feel like getting out (of the vehicle) and smacking educated young people and children five to seven times to wake them up.” “In women, we perceive the goddess. Yet, the way the females move and dress makes them seem more like “Shurpanakha” than the goddess herself. Dress properly, friends. God has given you a wonderful and lovely physique. A video of the religious service when the BJP representative made the contentious comments afterwards became popular online.
