Rahul Gandhi’s troubles seem to be getting worse as the late Hindutva philosopher Veer Savarkar’s grandson filed a criminal defamation charge against the Congressman in Pune, Maharashtra, accusing him of making false accusations against Savarkar during his speech in London.
The grandson of V D Savarkar, Satyaki Savarkar, said that his attorneys filed a lawsuit with the municipal court under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code.
When asked about the specifics of the complaint, Satyaki Savarkar told the news outlet ANI that Rahul Gandhi had brought up the matter when speaking with the Indian diaspora in London.
Rahul Gandhi visited England last month and said at one of the meetings that Veer Savarkar had written in his book that he and his group of 5–6 buddies had been thrashing a Muslim and Veer Savarkar had relished it. Since the event was made up, such comment is insulting, Satyaki stated.
“Rahul Gandhi and some of his supporters have spoken a lot about alleged petitions and pensions. Actually, there were pleas for mercy and a living allowance. We’ve arrived at the court,” he continued.
He continued by saying that Veer Savarkar had never experienced such a thing. Satyaki remarked that he advocated for democracy and counselled Muslims to develop a rational mindset.
Rahul Gandhi allegedly made these remarks during the encounter, according to a video that the grandson of Savarkar said was available and will be shown in court.
Advocate Anirudh Ganu, one of the two layers defending Satyaki Savarkar, said, “Since the court officer (assistant registrar) was not present in the court, they told us to come on Saturday and the case number will be issued.”
On March 23, the Surat district court found a former Wayanad MP guilty of criminal defamation for allegedly making a joke about the “Modi Surname” in 2019. Before the Karnataka assembly election, Gandhi asked a crowd in Kolar, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
In the four-year-old slander case, the court gave the Congress leader a two-year jail term. To give him time to file an appeal with a higher court, the court decided to defer his sentence for 30 days. Rahul Gandhi was removed from the Lok Sabha on March 24 as a result of his verdict in the defamation case.
Rahul Gandhi then filed a petition with the sessions court, which on April 3 granted him bail and continued to hear his request for a stay of execution on April 13.
