A man was given the death penalty by a court in this city on Wednesday for raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl the previous year.
Amit Kumar Prajpati, a special POCSO judge, recommended hanging the offender till death.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Sanjiv Bakharwa, Kapil Kashyap was found guilty by the court on Monday, and the court had scheduled its judgment for Wednesday.
Two sisters, ages nine and six, were enticed on August 18 of last year by Kashyap, who offered to feed them ice cream. He rode them to a sugarcane field on his bicycle and made an attempt to rape both of the girls.
The six-year-old attempted to rescue herself, but Kashyap smacked her, knocking her out. According to Bakharwa, he believed she was dead. The nine-year-old was raped, he continued, and afterwards strangled to death by Kashyap.
Originally, a kidnapping case was filed based on their father’s accusation. According to him, the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and the murder and rape sections of the Indian Criminal Code were added throughout the inquiry.
