Early on Friday, the rupee lost 3 paise to trade at 82.12 versus the US dollar due to a downward trend in local markets.
However, the home currency was maintained and the loss was limited, according to dealers, due to the weaker dollar relative to important competitors abroad and continued inflows of foreign money.
The local currency at the interbank foreign exchange started off weakly against the dollar at 82.11 and then declined further to 82.12, losing 3 paise from its previous closing.
The rupee’s closing price versus the US dollar on Thursday was 82.09.
The dollar index, which measures the value of the dollar against a basket of six other currencies, decreased 0.04 percent to 101.83.
The 30-share BSE Sensex decreased 312.99 points or 0.51 percent to 61,591.53 in early Friday activity on the local equities market. The NSE Nifty, which is more inclusive, dropped 93.50 points, or 0.51 percent, to 18,203.50.
The international oil benchmark, Brent crude futures, saw a 0.59 percent fall to USD 74.54 per barrel.
According to exchange statistics, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net purchasers on Thursday in the capital market, buying shares worth Rs 837.21 crore.
