Our environment depends on pollinators like bees and other insects. They make it possible to grow a wide variety of fruits, nuts, and seeds, assuring nutrition and food security. Over 75% of food crops and over 90% of wild blooming plants depend on animal pollination. However, human activities are putting these pollinators in greater danger. The United Nations declared May 20 to be World Bee Day in honor of bees in order to increase public awareness of pollinators, their difficulties, and their contribution to sustainable development.
Bee preservation would make a significant contribution to solving concerns with the world’s food supply and lowering hunger in poor nations. We must keep an eye on their reduction and protect biodiversity since pollinators are crucial to our existence.
2023 World Bee Day: Historical
World Bee Day is held on May 20 to mark the anniversary of the pioneering beekeeper Anton Jansa’s birth. Beekeeping has long been regarded as a key agricultural activity with a strong legacy in Slovenia, where Jansa came from a beekeeping family.
The International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations (Apimondia) gave its support to the Slovenian government’s 2016 proposal for World Bee Day. In 2017, the day received approval from UN Member States. World Bee Day was celebrated for the first time in 2018.
