According to discom authorities, Delhi’s peak electricity consumption on Tuesday reached 6,916 MW, the highest level this summer, as the city battled an intense heatwave.
They said that after maintaining relatively low for most of April and May, Delhi’s electricity demand has been progressively rising.
It reached 6,916 MW at 3:31 pm on Tuesday, the most this season and above the peak electricity demand of 6,532 MW on Monday, according to discom authorities.
Delhi’s electricity demand is mostly caused by cooling load. In fact, they claimed that the cooling load from air conditioners, coolers, and fans accounts for about half of Delhi’s summertime energy consumption.
Parts of Delhi were hit by a searing heatwave, with seven of the capital’s 22 meteorological stations registering high temperatures that above 45 degrees.
According to them, the city’s greatest summer electricity consumption was 7,695 MW and it may surpass 8,100 MW this year.
According to a BSES spokeswoman, the peak electricity demand in the regions serviced by the discoms BRPL and BYPL was 2,934 MW and 1,525 MW, respectively.
“It was accomplished. The peak electricity consumption in Delhi has varied greatly this month. It has grown by 3,272 MW, or 89 percent, from 3,644 MW on May 1 to 6,916 MW today, the spokeswoman added.
A representative for Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) said that the discom “successfully” fulfilled the day’s 2,012 MW peak demand.
The peak electricity consumption in Delhi from May 1 to May 21 this year, according to the discom authorities, was lower than on the equivalent days in May 2022. However, compared to the equivalent peak power demand last year, it increased by 13% on May 22 and 14% on May 23.
Around two crore people live in south, west, east, and central Delhi, and BSES discoms are prepared to handle their energy needs. According to the BSES spokeswoman, these agreements include long-term power purchase contracts and financial arrangements with other states.
