A 40-year-old man allegedly sexually assaulted a 20-year-old girl in the ladies compartment of a moving local train in Mumbai. The incident took place on Wednesday morning when the victim girl was traveling alone. When the victim informed the police about the incident, the police immediately got into action. Police arrested the accused in about eight hours after the incident.
It is being told that the girl, a resident of Girgaon in Mumbai, was going towards Belapur in Navi Mumbai, where she had to appear for an exam. The girl boarded the Harbor Line local train from CSMT on Wednesday morning. As the train started moving, a man entered the ladies compartment, which was empty at that time. According to the complaint, the girl was sexually assaulted at around 7:26 am between CSMT and Masjid stations. When the girl raised an alarm, the accused got down at Masjid station and fled from there.
The girl then approached the GRP and lodged a complaint, following which an FIR was lodged against an unknown person. Teams comprising personnel from GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Crime Branch and Mumbai Police launched a search for the accused. Police examined the footage of CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the Masjid station. Later the accused was identified and arrested around 4 pm. The statement of the girl has been recorded, in which she has explained the incident. At the same time, the investigation is going on after arresting the accused. The accused will be produced in the court on Thursday.
According to the information received, the accused is a daily wage laborer. A case was registered against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rape. Further investigation is underway. The joint team of GRP and RPF arrested the accused Nawaz Karimin in 8 hours and registered a case of rape against him.
