Union minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that the Emergency, which he called a “black spot” in independent India’s history, had been healed because to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to democracy.
According to Singh, Prime Minister Modi will always be recognised for building a solid basis for India’s democracy since it was during his tenure that it was made possible for every advantage of democracy to reach the person waiting in line at the back without any prejudice.
Speaking at an intellectual gathering to commemorate the conclusion of the Narendra Modi administration’s nine-year term, he said that “it is India’s decade and India’s century” and that India’s time has come.
Invoking the prime minister, Singh said that while the 1975 Emergency stomped and stifled democracy, India was nevertheless able to emerge unhurt from that darkest chapter of post-independence history because democracy is ingrained in the country’s DNA.
Indeed, the mother of democracy is India. The average Indian has democracy in his or her blood, the speaker said.
The senior BJP politician said that the Emergency, which was a “black spot” in independent India’s history, had been healed by Prime Minister Modi’s dedication to democracy.
On this day in 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi proclaimed the Emergency.
In order for the younger generation to comprehend the relevance of real democracy, its worth, and the sacrifices made by “our seniors to save and sustain it,” Singh said it is critical to evaluate the “dark period of Emergency.”
The Jana Sangh leaders supported the pro-democracy movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan and stood up against the draconian measures implemented by the government, according to the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, who praised the dedication of leaders and the general populace in opposing the declaration of Emergency.
He remembered that Jana Sangh adhered to the maxim “nation first, self last” in its entirety and disbanded as a party to join the JP movement.
In response to Winston Churchill’s prediction that India wouldn’t remain a democracy for even 50 years after gaining independence, Singh claimed that if Churchill were still alive today, he would have regretted his prediction after witnessing India’s development under Narendra Modi into a dynamic democracy that is leading the world in every field.
In many areas, including the economic, India has overtaken Churchill’s UK today, he said.
He said that now, in addition to being seen as a stable democracy, India is also a power to be reckoned with. “This was evident from Modi’s just-concluded US visit, when even the US visibly accepted India as an equal partner in all the bilateral engagements,” he said.
