According to US Ambassador to Kiev Bridget A. Brink, India can make a substantial contribution to settling the conflict in Ukraine given its growing global prominence and current G20 chairmanship.
Brink said that India’s leadership is essential in resolving numerous global concerns and that New Delhi’s growing concern over the negative effects of the conflict on the Global South provides the basis for its participation in defusing the situation. Brink made these remarks during a special online briefing for a limited number of Indian media.
She said that the United States hoped to cooperate with its friends and partners throughout the globe, including India, in favor of freedom, democracy, and nations’ right to choose their own course in life.
From Kyiv, I see both the devastation caused by the conflict and the tenacity and fortitude of the Ukrainian people, according to Brink.
According to the ambassador, the G20 theme of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” and India’s ambitions for global leadership both embody the spirit of “peace” and urge for collaborative action.
The conflict, according to her, has broad ramifications for the world economy, food security, and the fundamental values of sovereignty and territorial integrity enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Brink said, “As the G20 President for this year, your country’s leadership is essential to influencing global events, especially in nations like Ukraine.
India has not yet denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has pushed for the conflict’s settlement via negotiations and diplomacy.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to put a stop to the war when they met privately on September 16 of last year in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
“We agree that the moment is not right for war, as Prime Minister Modi said. Ukraine has suffered much as a result of defending its independence and sovereignty. The human misery and death here are heartbreaking, and the war’s aftereffects extend well beyond Ukraine’s borders, according to Brink.
Every democratic nation, according to her, has a stake in upholding the UN Charter’s guiding principles.
The leaders of India have talked about these fundamental values, so I believe the Indian people are aware of how important territorial integrity and freedom of sovereignty are, Brink remarked.
While the conflict in Ukraine is taking place in Europe, she said, “its global ramifications should motivate leaders everywhere to look for ways to put an end to it.”
Additionally, Brink praised India for its efforts to protect the international system of democracy and the rule of law.
“We are grateful for India’s partnership through the G20 and the Quad, as well as on the international stage by its tireless leadership in advancing multilateral cooperation and upholding the global order based on democracy and the rule of law,” she added.
The ambassador said, “India helps ensure that our citizens and democracies around the world are free to flourish in peace.”
In order to guarantee that people all around the globe can obtain the food they so sorely need, the US ambassador to Ukraine stated that India’s leaders have a special voice to advocate for developing nations and to support the continuance and growth of the Black Sea grain program.
The envoy also mentioned India’s efforts to assist the Global South or poor nations via its G20 chairmanship.
