Megan Rapinoe of the USA Women’s team referred to the defeat to Sweden on penalties as “a sick joke.” The USA, the tournament’s defending winner, was surprisingly eliminated after losing in a penalty shootout.
After a tumultuous night in Melbourne, the World Cup champions, who were seeking a third straight championship, will return home.
The 38-year-old football player Rapinoe, who will retire at the conclusion of the current campaign, came off the bench and missed a penalty as Sweden triumphed 5-4.
She was sobbing during her post-game interview with Fox Sports since she had served as the face of women’s football for so long both domestically and internationally.
“This is like a cruel joke, I mean. Personally, I think this is a dark comedy. I blundered a penalty, she said.
“This strikes a balance with the game’s aesthetic appeal. It may be unkind and just not our day, in my opinion,” she remarked.
Forward Similar to Rapinoe, Alex Morgan was devastated as a member of the winning teams in 2015 and 2019.
“Just heartbroken. The squad put everything on the line tonight, and it feels like a nightmare. It doesn’t matter, even if I think we dominated,” she added.
“On the day we’re leaving, it’s simply the highs and lows of soccer that don’t feel fantastic… It’s hard to take in,” she remarked.
The 34-year-old Morgan was unsure about her position on the squad.
“I don’t know, I was so focused on the World Cup that I don’t know, I’m just ready to get back to San Diego, get back to work, and go from there,” she added.
After a string of poor games in Australia and New Zealand, United States coach Vlatko Andonovski was under fire, but he insisted that his team deserved to win.
I’m both really proud of them and heartbroken for them that we had to part ways the way we did. I believed we produced enough to win this game, and I thought we deserved to win it,” he remarked.
“We put up a fight, we proudly represented this nation, we demonstrated who we are, and we did everything right.”
Zecira Musovic made an astounding 11 saves to keep Sweden in the game until Lina Hurtig squeaked home the game-winning spot-kick.
US captain Lindsey Horan saw it as a harsh way to cap up the competition.
To be quite honest, penalties stink. I’ve experienced too many of them in my career, and they’re cruel, but I’m happy of every player that volunteered to take one today,” she added.
Andonovski knew it would be challenging to succeed Jill Ellis, who guided the group to back-to-back World Cup victories.
He didn’t want to think too much, however, about what lies ahead.
“I believed our strategy and game plan were excellent. If given the opportunity again, I would probably follow the same course of action since we followed the game plan and had the appropriate persons on the field to do so, he added.
Rapinoe and other US players have drawn support from certain left-leaning politicians and hostility from other right-leaning ones due to their openness to communicate their political opinions and their successful push for equal pay with the men’s squad.
First Lady Jill Biden praised the group from home.
“You gave this sport significance. We were moved by your tenacity and resolve today. You have our admiration, she tweeted.
Always keep in mind that you inspire women and girls to stand up and pursue their ambitions worldwide, she stated.
