The cable of a lift at a group housing complex here broke on Thursday, causing a free fall between floors and the death of a 73-year-old lady, according to police authorities.
According to a police spokesman, the incident at the high-rise society in Sector 137 at about 4.30 pm included a lift that got trapped between several of the middle floors of the building rather than hitting the ground.
When the lift’s wire broke, Sushila Devi was the only one inside, causing a free fall. She had pressed the elevator’s down button from the eighth level. She entered the elevator, which was ascending, but someone from a higher level of the building had already summoned it, the official said.
“Today, a lady entering a lift collapsed as a result of a lift wire breaking at the Paras Tierra Society in Sector 137, close to the Sector 142 Police Station. In the elevator by herself, the lady. She was taken to Felix Hospital but passed away while receiving care, according to a statement from the police.
The event happened at around 4:30 p.m., and the lady died an hour later in the hospital.
The lady seemed to have suffered injuries from the lift falling on her, as well as some elbow abrasions and bruises to the back of her head. Due to the rapid nature of the occurrence, her lack of a pulse and dilated eyelids when she was taken to the hospital suggested a potential cardiac arrest, a doctor at Felix Hospital told PTI.
The doctor noted that efforts were made to revive the patient, but they were unsuccessful.
While police were being dispatched, hundreds of Paras Tierra residents gathered in the society’s complex to demonstrate against the occurrence and the maintenance of shared utilities including the operation of the elevators.
“The relatives of the lady has arrived at the police station. If the family files a complaint, a FIR would be filed right away, and appropriate legal action will be done, according to Rajiv Dixit, Additional DCP (Central Noida), who spoke to PTI.
Regarding the homeowners’ protest, he said that extra personnel, including the supervisors of the neighborhood Sector 142 police station, the Phase 2 and Phase 3 police stations nearby, and ACP 3 (Central Noida) Sumit Shukla, were on the scene and were keeping an eye on the issue.
“There is no problem with law and order. The demonstrators are being subdued. It’s a public problem, and police would respond appropriately if a FIR is filed, the officer said.
Notably, earlier on Thursday, another elevator in one of the Paras Tierra towers had a free fall, albeit it was empty at the time, according to a message published on the WhatsApp group for the community’s inhabitants. This occurrence preceded the woman’s death.
