The first openly homosexual female politician in Australia, Penny Wong, announced her marriage to girlfriend Sophie Allouache on Sunday.
Wong posted a picture of herself and Allouache clutching a bouquet and captioned the post on Instagram’s social media site, saying, “We are delighted that so many of our family and friends could share this special day with us.”
The Sydney Morning Herald stated that Wong and Allouache, who have been together for almost 20 years, got married on Saturday at a winery in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. In the Senate, Wong is the senator for South Australia.
Wong, a Labour senator since 2002, is the first person of Asian descent to serve in the Australian government.
In 2017, Australia legalised same-sex unions, marking a significant milestone for a nation where homosexuality was not decriminalised in any state until 1997.
