The charismatic and powerful leader Balasaheb Thackeray created the Shiv Sena, a well-known political party in Maharashtra, on June 19, 1966. The passion for regionalism and the desire to defend the rights and interests of the Marathi-speaking community are the roots of Shiv Sena. Once a cartoonist, Balasaheb Thackeray became a powerful political figure who connected with the general populace. Unfortunately, his son, Uddhav Thackeray, could not maintain his power and popularity.

The party was founded to address the challenges that the people in Maharashtra faced, especially those about language, jobs, and local pride. The identification of Shiv Sena as an organisation that spoke for the common people, particularly the working class, was greatly influenced by Balasaheb’s leadership and his oratory. Street-level activism and a close connection to grassroots sentiments typified the party’s strategy. The attractiveness of Shiv Sena was largely attributed to Balasaheb Thackeray’s character and management approach. Popular for his honesty and skill in communication, Balasaheb captivated the public’s interest. His’sabhas’ struck a chord with Maharashtra’s cultural culture, in addition to being politically motivated. Under his direction, Shiv Sena developed into a forum for the general public to speak out about their goals and be heard in the greater political conversation. Balasaheb’s love for ‘Marathi Manoos’, his expressive magazine Marmik, and his mouthpiece Dainik Samna were his tools to battle the political odds and allegations. Matoshri, his residence, was known as a place for justice and support. Meena Tai Thackeray, his wife, who was called Maa Saheb, equally contributed to taking care of the karyakartas and the needy poor who came to meet Balasaheb. Nobody left without a meal from Matoshri in the olden times. That was the love that was not just talked about but showered on the Shiv Sainiks.

Shiv Sena’s relevance to the general public came from its emphasis on resolving difficulties that people encountered daily, such as securing employment opportunities and preserving local identity. Support for the party’s aggressive stance in defending the rights of Marathi-speaking people was strong, particularly in Mumbai and the neighbouring territories. Essentially, Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sena enabled the general populace to speak out for their rights and ambitions, acting as a catalyst for socio-political transformation. Balasaheb’s reputation as a leader who stood up for the common man still shapes the party’s message and its standing in Maharashtra politics.

He once said, “The doorstep of my house will be full of footwear till I am sitting here and helping people.” The same happened. After his sad demise, the doors to Matoshri were closed for the poor and needy.

Sena Minus Balasaheb:

The tragic passing of Balasaheb Thackeray on November 17, 2012, signalled a significant turning point in Maharashtra politics and the history of the Shiv Sena. Balasaheb had an impact on the state’s culture and social fabric, in addition to politics. His passing not only created a gap in the party but also set off a chain of events that drastically altered Shiv Sen’s dynamics. The distinctive combination of boldness, charisma, and unwavering dedication to the cause of the Marathi populace defined Balasaheb Thackeray’s leadership style. His extraordinary presence served to unite Shiv Sena for many years, making him a symbol for both party members and supporters. After his death, the party had to navigate an enormously difficult future without its leader.

Within the Shiv Sena, one of the immediate effects of Balasaheb’s passing was a change in leadership. Uddhav Thackeray, his son, assumed leadership of the party. Unlike his father, Uddhav approached politics with a more measured and practical demeanour, with the interference of a few Sena leaders. The departure of Balasaheb’s autocratic leadership and the arrival of Uddhav’s more diplomatic approach signalled a change in the party’s policy and tone. Once identified with the violent regionalism and Hindutva ideology of Balasaheb, the Shiv Sena underwent a period of recalibration, with Azaan competitions and no Marathi agenda. The party had to overcome new obstacles to adjust to the changing political climate, even in its traditional stronghold of Mumbai and the surrounding areas but it left its core to fit in. Internal changes resulted from the shift in leadership as devoted followers and seasoned participants struggled to cope without their charismatic leader.

The consequences of Balasaheb’s death went beyond the Shiv Sena’s internal politics. Maharashtra changed in terms of its political environment as well. The party had been a major force in state politics for many years, and other political organisations tried to fill the vacuum left by Balasaheb’s departure. Shiv Sena’s longtime ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), became a powerful force in Maharashtra politics, changing power structures and alliances. By this time, politics was not about muscle power but brain power, and that’s where Devendra Fadnavis overtook Udhhav Thackeray. The haphazardly operating Shiv Sena was incapable of achieving the strategic growth that Fadnavis had planned and was achieving with each passing day. Progressive thoughts and strategic growth made Devendra Fadnavis a prominent figure, while Udhhav Thackeray was still struggling to handle the unreasonable power handed over to him.

Public outbursts of emotion during the grieving period following Balasaheb’s passing further demonstrated the leader’s strong bond with the populace. In addition to losing its leader, Shiv Sena also lost the public face of a movement that has long influenced Maharashtra’s political landscape. Shiv Sena and Maharashtra’s political climate were significantly and immediately impacted by the tragic passing of Balasaheb Thackeray. In the absence of its charismatic founder, the party had to reestablish its identity and deal with internal issues as well as a change in leadership. In addition to changing the direction of the Shiv Sena, Balasaheb’s death created a vacuum that changed the political landscape of the state. The days that followed his passing were a time of reflection, adjustment, and change for the party and the greater Maharashtra political landscape.

Sena under Uddhav Thackeray:

Upholding and expanding the dominance of Shiv Sena was a difficult assignment for Uddhav Thackeray, the successor apparent to his father Balasaheb Thackeray’s political legacy. Nonetheless, others have voiced concerns, implying that Uddhav found it difficult to hold onto the authority and unique approach that defined the party throughout Balasaheb’s tenure. Additionally, concerns have been expressed concerning the involvement of Sanjay Raut and its impact on Shiv Sena’s strength. Sanjay Raut, an ardent follower of Sharad Pawar, systematically distorted the picture of Shiv Sena through his language, wrong advice, and his collaborations with the NCP and Congress behind the stage.  The issue of stepping into his father’s vibrant and charismatic shoes was one of Uddhav Thackeray’s major obstacles. Strong Hindutva philosophy, forceful regionalism, and an affinity for the masses were hallmarks of Balasaheb Thackeray’s leadership. His straightforward communication approach played a pivotal role in moulding Shiv Sena’s brand and allure. In contrast, some opponents contend that Uddhav’s more measured and practical approach lacked the forceful and decisive leadership that had come to define the party.

Under Uddhav’s leadership, Shiv Sena experienced a dramatic metamorphosis. Once renowned for its tough and unyielding approach, the party formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi administration in Maharashtra by forming a coalition with ideological foes, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Indian National Congress. This arrangement cast doubt on the party’s adherence to its fundamental beliefs since it represented a break from the Shiv Sena-BJP collaboration of the past. The compromises made in the creation of the MVA administration, according to opponents, compromised Shiv Sena’s fundamental values and lessened its distinctive character. There were doubts regarding the party’s capacity to successfully represent the interests of its core electorate as a result of its coalition membership with partners who had different ideologies. Some viewed Uddhav’s leadership style as less aggressive and more accommodating than Balasaheb’s, which was considered to be a forceful and assertive position.

Sanjay Raut was instrumental in establishing the party’s narrative and handling the challenges of coalition politics. His controversial remarks and abnormal articles have drawn criticism throughout. Some contend that Raut’s remarks on a range of topics, such as Bollywood and national politics, sparked debates that diverted attention from the party’s initial goals. The party’s collaboration with the NCP and Congress, as well as controversies involving Sanjay Raut, contributed to internal strife within the Shiv Sena. Several party sympathisers and members voiced their displeasure with the party’s direction and what they saw as a departure from its core values. The internal conflict created doubt about Uddhav Thackeray’s capacity to uphold party unity and successfully convey a single, cohesive vision. While acknowledging the difficulties and criticisms is crucial, it’s also critical to understand that political processes are nuanced and that decision-making is frequently challenging for leaders.  There is disagreement over how much Uddhav’s leadership has altered the strength and style of the Shiv Sena; opinions differ according to political affiliations and ideological stances, but definitely, it has not grown or even sustained power.

The shift from Balasaheb to Uddhav Thackeray signified a significant turning point in the history of the Shiv Sena.  Leadership changes, the formation of new coalitions, and the contributions of people like Sanjay Raut have all influenced Shiv Sena’s trajectory. While complaints persist, the party’s capacity to adapt to shifting political circumstances and sustain its relevance will ultimately determine its future standing in Maharashtra politics.

What triggered the debacle of Uddhav Thackeray’s Sena?

No contact with the party bearers: Uddhav Thackeray was busy basking in the glory of his newly found power and forgot to acknowledge the people who had given this power to the party. The doors to Matoshri were not just closed for common needy people but for the office bearers of Shiv Sena too. MLAs of Shiv Sena also had no access to the party leader.  It was getting difficult for the party people to get meetings with their boss for months. This frustrated the Shiv Sena leaders. The Karyakartas are the people who run the party. If they are not taken care of, the party suffers. That is exactly what happened.

Password for Matoshri, ‘Milind Narvekar’: Mr. Milind Narvekar, ex-PA of Uddhav Thackeray, was handling his appointments and meetings. It was impossible to meet Uddhav Thackeray without his permission. Mr. Narvekar used to decide if Uddhav Thackeray should meet someone or not. This was an anti-networking activity that has been brewing in Shiv Sena since 2012. People tried hard to connect but later lost hope and chose to stay away. Sadly, even the party workers felt the same.

Delayed decisions: Since Uddhav Thackeray was never available, decision-making was delayed most of the time. Sanjay Raut, the executive editor of Dainik Saamna, gradually took over the entire decision-making process. He not only humiliated other party members but also used Shiv Sena’s power for his whims and fancies. Decisions were not taken in time, and matters were kept on hold. The decisions made by Sanjay Raut were not in favour of Udhhav Thackeray. This was as if there was no plan for the party ahead.

Narvekar vs. Raut Battle: Between the battles of Milind Narvekar and Sanjay Raut, Udhhav Thackeray suffered. Both Narvekar and Raut have made their fortunes by being around Thackerays but did not return the favour when needed. Both created difficult situations constantly, and who would throw whom out was the competition. Raut has won the battle now, as Narvekar is kept away from the glare.

No control over Dainik Saamna: Uddhav Thackeray did not care to have a check on what was printed in Dainik Saamna and completely depended on Sanjay Raut for it. Mr. Raut took advantage of the same and used Daiik Saamna to settle his feuds. Once, a politically charged newspaper became a revenge pad and a personal venting diary for Sanjay Raut, who was eating up the credibility of the party with every article.

Promotion of Aditya despite his inexperience: Aditya Thackeray, the newcomer who had no experience, was made a minister without considering people who had given their lives for Shiv Sena. Politics cannot be treated as a proprietary concern. But the Thackeray family, especially Rashmi Thackeray, was in a rush to make her son a minister. Without grooming, training, and ground experience, Aditya became the minister, and that caused a feeling of displeasure among the party.

Absolute freedom for Sanjay Raut: The freedom given to Sanjay Raut was a deal-breaker for Shiv Sena, as he started doing, writing, and speaking whatever came to his mind. Obscene behaviour and unparliamentary language have been the status symbols of Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut. He misused Dainik Samna, the office of Dainik Samna, and the party money to suit his progress. From using the police department for his vendetta to collaborating with people who did not think well of Shiv Sena, he did everything possible to pull down Uddhav Thackeray. He not only publicly spoke about issues and things that would get Uddhav Thackeray in trouble but also misguided Aditya Thackeray for his own self-interest. His choice of Sharad Pawar over Balasaheb always distorted the picture of Shiv Sena by pushing the entry of the NCP with Shiv Sena. Every morning, the press conference that Mr. Raut takes is spoofing the image of Udhhav and his party and is looked at as a joke, but the party leader hasn’t taken any cognizance of it.

Adity-Varun team: Varun Sardesai and Aditya Thackeray, two political amateurs, were looking at Shiv Sena as their home company and were managing the same way. A huge party, Shiv Sena, was left to kids who were overlooked by the vicious uncle Raut, who never intended good for Uddhav Thackeray. The way they were treating the old-time Shiv Sainiks was the worst thing that could happen to Shiv Sena. All power without humility leads to a great loss, and this is one example.

Eknath Shinde Shifting Gears: After extreme humiliation and waiting, Eknath Shinde chose to get away from the toxicity of Sanjay Raut and an unavailable boss, Uddhav Thackery. He moved out with other upset party members to regain the glory of the Shiv Sena, which was started by Balasaheb Thackeray. With a 40 MLA majority and the determination to lead Shiv Sena, he started a new phase in his life and for the party, stating that he headed Shiv Sena and became the Chief Minister.

No strategy, no think tank: There is no plan for the year, there is no research team, and there is no advisory board. Everything happens according to moods and fancies in Udhhav Sena. Milind Narvekar is now kept away, Sanjay Raut has his agenda, and Aditya does not have experience or standing.

Final Word:

No Balasaheb Thackeray lover would like to see the debacle of his son, but at the same time, the son should also feel the same and fire people who have burned his kingdom down. He needs people with ideas to build Sena; he needs plans and a framework. Let us hope Uddhav Thackeray reads this piece of analysis and makes amends at earliest.
