Raju Jha, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was allegedly shot dead on Saturday night in Shaktigarh, Purba Burdwan district, West Bengal, according to authorities.
IANS reports that unidentified gunmen opened fire on National Highway-19 near a well-known sweetmeat shop in Saktigarh, East Burdwan. In the assault, a second individual suffered injuries.
Witnesses said that the event occurred about 8 p.m. when 4-5 persons were waiting at a store near the sweetmeat business when a blue four-wheeler pulled up. Next, according to reports, the car’s passengers fired bullets.
When the event happened, Raju Jha was traveling to Kolkata. He was a merchant and coal dealer from Durgapur. Jha was sent to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the police. The wounded people received medical care at a hospital.
The accused left the site after the encounter, according to ANI. Jha was charged for running an illegal coal company in Silpanchal when the Left Front was in power. Many charges were also filed against him when the Trinamool administration was in office.
The cops said further investigation is being done.
