As the Karnataka High Court rejected his request for anticipatory relief in a bribery case in which his son had already been detained, BJP Legislator Madal Virupakshappa was taken into custody on Monday.
The state-run Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd, which produces the renowned Mysore Sandal soap, was headed by the Channagiri Legislator. Shortly after his son Prashanth Madal’s arrest, he resigned as the company’s chairman.
After being granted temporary anticipatory bail on March 7, only days after the Lokayukta police wing exposed the fraud and detained his son and four other people for requesting bribes on behalf of the Legislator, Virupakshappa sought the high court in order to get anticipatory bail.
After hearing from Virupakshappa and the prosecution on March 17, a single-judge court of Judge K. Natarajan denied his request for anticipatory release.
The BJP Legislator ran into trouble when his son Prashanth Madal, the head accountant of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, was caught on March 2 receiving a Rs 40 lakh bribe on his father’s behalf by the Lokayukta police wing.
According to reports, the sum was a portion of the Rs 81 lakh bribe his congressman father was supposed to receive from a supplier of raw materials to a soap and detergent firm.
