To provide relief to Mumbaikars facing air pollution crisis, BMC has come up with a master plan. BMC has found 24 such points, through which environmental problems in Mumbai can be solved. There are short term and long term plans. These include traffic control system, road traffic signal, national clean air program, air quality, waste processing unit, solar LED etc. Under the Climate Action Plan, BMC will spend Rs 4287 crore on these schemes to deal with the environmental problem. All these schemes will be completed between the year 2023 to the year 2025. BMC Joint Commissioner Ramesh Pawar said that environmental pollution is a serious problem.
For this BMC has made short term and long term policy. Through this, the situation will be gradually improved by implementing the schemes. Thousands of BEST buses ply in Mumbai. These will be gradually converted into electric buses. In the first phase, 2100 single decker and 200 double decker buses will be inducted. BMC will spend Rs 900 crore on these. Fully Adaptive Traffic Control System (FATC) is planned to be installed at 70 locations in Mumbai. 26 crore will be spent. BMC hopes that with this system, trains will not have to stop at the signal. Mumbai currently has 652 signal junctions. Of these, 394 signal junctions work in fixed time mode. 258 signal areas work under the traffic control system.
BMC to install air quality monitoring system at 5 locations in Mumbai. About Rs 7 crore is being spent on this. Waste processing units are being set up at 8 places for disposal of waste in Mumbai. BMC is spending Rs 21 crore on this.
C&D Waste Processing Plant will be set up and commissioned in Mumbai. Waste will be processed in the city and eastern suburbs. This plant will be set up in Navi Mumbai. Rs 1031 crore will be spent on this. A separate plant for western suburbs is planned at Gorai. Rs 1024 crore will be spent on this. Outdoor dust mitigation units will be installed at 5 locations in Mumbai. Rs 27 crore will be spent on this. Cleaning work will be done by electric sweeping machine. 48 crore will be spent for this. The plan to generate electricity from waste is progressing. 600 metric tonnes of waste will be processed daily. Rs 1020 crore is being spent on this. 6 crematoriums in Mumbai to be converted into PNG based furnace and installation of air pollution control system. BMC will spend Rs 2.32 crore on this.
