According to Muktesh Pardeshi, Special Secretary for G20, India is seeking a formal confirmation from China about President Xi Jinping’s attendance at the G20 Leaders Summit planned here next weekend.
“Some reports have appeared in the press. But we rely on formal authorization. Furthermore, we have yet to see (a formal confirmation). When questioned about rumors that Xi might miss the G20 summit on September 9–10 in favor of sending Prime Minister Li Qiang in his place, Pardeshi told PTI, “Until we see it, I am not in a position to declare either way.
Pardeshi said that a diplomatic letter is often used to announce a global leader’s attendance at conferences like the G20.
“I believe that is expected…Regarding the other confirmations, the most have been received, he said of Xi’s participation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already been informed by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would not be able to go to India to attend the summit.
Among the G20 leaders who have already confirmed their attendance at the summit are US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
On September 10, Modi will deliver Brazilian President Lula the reins of the G20 Presidency.
On December 1, Brazil will officially take over as G20 President.
