On Friday, protests broke out in Delhi in opposition to a campaign by city officials to remove unauthorised building from the area around the Shani temple in Mandawali. Following a fight, Delhi police apprehended numerous residents.
Authorities made it clear that the drive was “only to clear the pavement and remove the railings.”
“PWD was supposed to conduct an anti-encroachment campaign today. They (PWD) requested our help in removing a temple’s grill since it was blocking the pavement. The grill was removed amicably thanks to our intervention, according to Amrutha Guguloth, DCP East Delhi.
People from the neighbourhood protested the notion of removing the “illegal construction” since the temple has been there for years and no one has ever reported any issues.
Large numbers of Delhi police were present as residents chanted anti-demolition chants. Atishi, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), said that the L-G gave the order to demolish the temple. “The L-G gave the order to demolish the temple. When he served as the home minister in Delhi, Manish Sisodia voiced reservations, but the L-G rejected his recommendation, she added.
