As it welcomed over 4.32 million passengers in August, a phenomenal rise of 32 percent over the same month last year, the airport was a hive of activity. Over 1.1 million passengers were served at the same time by 33 percent more foreign flights than the previous year.
In August, there were a total of 20,711 domestic flights and 6,960 foreign flights over Mumbai, which was a hive of activity. Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai were by far the most popular domestic destinations among tourists. On the international front, Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi continued to rank as the top airport destinations.
With a commanding 48 percent market share, IndiGo grabbed the top spot in the domestic market, ahead of Air India (18%) and Vistara (17%). With a 22 percent market share in the international market, IndiGo continued to lead the pack, closely followed by Air India at 14 percent and Vistara holding onto a solid 10 percent share.
I’m referring to the freight industry, where the airport saw a rise. Air freight traffic increased by 6% in August 2023, with domestic cargo tonnage increasing by 3% and remarkable foreign cargo tonnage growing by 8%.
Taking a step back, it is evident that the Indian aviation sector has been continuously growing ever since COVID-related constraints were loosened in December 2022. A praiseworthy 12.4 million passengers traveled domestically in the nation last month, a notable 5 percent rise over August 2019’s pre-pandemic levels.
The extraordinary turnaround at Mumbai International Airport serves as a ray of optimism for the aviation sector as it continues to recover from the obstacles created by the epidemic.
