A day after declaring his candidacy for reelection, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he may not be the only person who can defeat Republican Donald Trump in 2024, but that he does know him well.
When asked whether he could defeat Trump again on his own, Biden said, “I may not be the only one, but I know him well, I know the risk he offers to our democracy, and we’ve been down this road before.
On Tuesday, Biden announced the start of his 2024 campaign, possibly setting up a rematch of the 2020 contest with Trump, who is presently the clear favorite among Republicans.
Biden added that even if Trump did not, he would still be running for office in 2024.
The president said that there is still work to be done in order to complete his mission and set up the country to be “economically and politically secure for a long time.”
Biden said, “I think we have to complete the job.”
Despite being the focus of several judicial proceedings — the most recent hearing this week was on a rape claim in a New York court — and his participation in attempting to rig the 2020 election, Trump is presently the undisputed favorite for the Republican nominee.
Trump attacked Biden for his age when he ran against him in 2020, calling him “Sleepy Joe” and using ugly slurs about his mental health. If Trump receives his party’s nominee, the assault will undoubtedly resume, perhaps with increased ferocity.
