The G-7 nations have pledged to support Ukraine in Apulia, and with Russia threatening to use long-range weaponry against Western foes, tensions between the two countries are expected to flare up once more.
Reputable officials predict that in the coming days, the Ukrainian front will heat up as the US supplies and operates the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to target the Russian front in Crimea, the UK supplies 300 km range Storm Shadow missiles, and France is prepared to send troops on the ground.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine was able to win over the major Western countries at this week’s G-7 meeting in Apulia with the help of an EU aid package of USD 50 billion headed by the US and USD 225 million in military hardware approved by the US Congress. The Russian supply station in Crimea is the goal, and it could prove to be Russian President Vladimir Putin’s figurative weak point.
President Zelensky and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a productive conversation during which the latter shared his thoughts on the conflict in Ukraine and Russian aggression. During his brief meeting with US President Joe Biden outside the G-7 conference, India received assurances from Washington over Washington’s dedication to a strong partnership with New Delhi and their shared challenge of countering China’s rise in the Indo-Pacific region.
During the G-7 meeting, it was clear that the US-led EU supported Zelensky in his conflict with Russia and was prepared to assist Ukraine in intensifying its offensive into Russian territory by using over-the-horizon weapons and stand-off long-range cruise missiles. While HIMARS is being used to degrade Russian anti-aircraft defences, the UK-France-designed Storm Shadow, or SCALP, is an air-launched weapon with precision guidance to kill the target at a range of 300 to 500 km.
As the Israeli war on Gaza continues, the world is becoming more and more unstable as Russian President Putin counters the Western supplies to Ukraine by declaring that he will provide weapons to countries and asymmetrical forces opposing US-led coalition. Putin hasn’t said that he won’t use nuclear weapons if Russian sovereignty is in danger.
