Indian weightlifters made history by taking home the team title at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships for the first time. In both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, the Indian team placed second. For the first time ever, a total of 14 medals in the competition were won by Indian weightlifters. Although the females also took home one silver and four gold medals, the guys earned three silver and six bronze.
At this event, which was held in Dores (Albania) from March 25 to April 1, males earned a total of 413 points and girls scored 393 points, according to Sahdev Yadav, president of the weightlifting squad. Egypt scored the most points among girls—591—while America came in second with 418. With 536 points, Armenia took the top spot among boys, while Kazakhstan came in third with 369 points. The competitors in this competition were Joshna, Akanksha, Asmita, Koyal, Meena, Sanjana, Martina, Dhanush, Tufel, Gurunaidu, Tomchou Mitei, Golom, and Bharali.
Jyoshna was formerly said to have won the silver medal in the snatch category, however in the clean and jerk event, she finished sixth out of seven lifters. In the same time, Dhanush won the men’s 49 kg competition by squatting a total of 200 kilogrammes (88 kg and 112 kg), making him the Prince of the Philippines. Behind Delos Santos and Eron Bores, he came in third. The 16-year-old weightlifter in the snatch event took home the silver medal. Athletes in the Youth Championship must be aged 13 to 17.
At regional and international competitions, medals are given out individually for the snatch, clean, and jerk and total weight divisions, however during the Olympic Games, just one medal is given out for total weight.
