Many such news come to light in the country when it comes to light that a farmer has committed suicide. In the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, the year 2023 has proved to be very bad for the farmers. Till August 31 this year, about 685 farmers have committed suicide, out of which the maximum of 186 deaths have occurred in Beed, the home district of state Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde. This information has been revealed in an official report.
The dry zone of Central Maharashtra includes eight districts: Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Parbhani, Nanded, Osmanabad, Hingoli and Latur. According to a report by the Divisional Commissioner’s Office, Aurangabad, 685 farmers committed suicide in the Marathwada region from January 1 to August 31 in 2023 and out of these, 294 deaths occurred in the three months of monsoon (June to August).
An official said that currently Marathwada has received 20.7 percent less rainfall. The region received 455.4 mm rainfall till September 11 while the average monsoon rainfall during this period is 574.4 mm. According to the report, the maximum number of 186 farmers committed suicide in Beed district. Beed is the home district of rebel Nationalist Congress Party leader Munde, who joined the Eknath Shinde-led government as a cabinet minister on July 2. He was given the agriculture ministry about 2 weeks later. According to the report, after Beed, the highest number of 113 farmers committed suicide in Osmanabad, followed by 110 in Nanded, 95 in Aurangabad, 58 in Parbhani, 51 in Latur, 50 in Jalna and 22 in Hingoli.
